About this worksheet

Learning to read an analog clock starts with two simple times: o'clock and half past. This first-grade worksheet shows twelve clearly drawn clocks. Each clock shows either a time on the hour, like 3:00, or a time on the half hour, like 7:30. Children read each clock and write the time in digital form on the line below.

How to use it: begin by pointing out the two hands. The short hand is the hour hand, and the long hand is the minute hand. When the minute hand points straight up to the 12, it is o'clock, and the hour hand points right at the hour. When the minute hand points straight down to the 6, it is half past, which we write as :30. Make sure your child notices that at half past, the hour hand sits halfway between two numbers. For 7:30, it is between the 7 and the 8, and the hour is still 7 because the hand has not reached 8 yet. This is the most common mix-up at this age.

The answer key shows the correct time for each clock. To build the skill in daily life, mention times out loud during the day, such as "It's 4:30, time for a snack." This worksheet supports Common Core standard 1.MD.B.3 (tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks). When your child is ready, our Grade 2 worksheet practices telling time to five minutes.
