About this worksheet

This first-grade worksheet continues our sight word series with eight more high-frequency words: said, you, look, come, here, they, was, and have. These words appear constantly in early readers, and several of them, such as said, was, they, have, and come, do not sound the way beginning readers expect from their spelling. Learning to recognize them instantly makes reading smoother and more enjoyable.

How to use it: in Part 1, your child reads each word aloud and traces it twice. Talk about the tricky parts. For example, said sounds like "sed," and the e at the end of have and come is silent. In Part 2, your child reads eight short sentences and chooses the word from the word bank that completes each one. Encourage them to reread the full sentence to check that it makes sense. When the missing word starts a sentence, remind them to use a capital letter.

The answer key shows the correct word for every sentence. If your child is unsure, read the sentence together and try two or three word bank words out loud; listening for which one sounds right is a helpful comprehension strategy. This worksheet supports Common Core standard RF.1.3.g (recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words). Use it after our first Sight Words worksheet, or mix both sets into a quick flash card game.
