About this worksheet
Nouns and verbs are the building blocks of every sentence. A noun names a person, place, or thing, and a verb shows an action. This second-grade grammar worksheet has fourteen short sentences, each with one word in bold. Children decide whether the bold word is a noun or a verb and write the answer on the line. The sentences describe everyday things, like a dog running to the gate or cookies that are warm, so children can focus on how each word is used.
There are seven nouns and seven verbs, mixed together so children have to think about every sentence. Some verbs show action in the present (runs, sleeps) and some in the past (climbed), which helps children recognize verbs in different forms.
How to use it: give your child two quick tests. To check for a noun, ask, "Can I put the word the or a in front of it?" (the park, a bird). To check for a verb, ask, "Can I do it, or can someone do it?" (I can sing, Mia can throw). Reading each sentence aloud and acting out the verbs can make this activity fun and memorable.
The answer key lists the correct answer for every sentence. This worksheet supports the Common Core grade 2 language standard L.2.1 (demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage) and reviews L.1.1.b and L.1.1.e (use nouns and verbs in sentences).
