About this worksheet

This fourth-grade worksheet gives practice multiplying larger numbers by a single digit. Problems 1 through 10 multiply a two-digit number by a one-digit number, and problems 11 through 20 step up to three-digit numbers. Many problems require regrouping, so students strengthen both their multiplication facts and their place-value understanding.

How to use it: students can use the standard algorithm, multiplying the ones first and regrouping into the tens, then the tens, then the hundreds. They can also use partial products, which shows the place-value thinking clearly. For example, 347 × 6 can be found as 300 × 6 = 1,800, 40 × 6 = 240, and 7 × 6 = 42, and 1,800 + 240 + 42 = 2,082. An area model (a rectangle split into hundreds, tens, and ones) is another helpful picture. Before solving, encourage a quick estimate; 347 × 6 is a little less than 350 × 6, which is 2,100. Estimating helps catch answers that are far off.

The answer key lists every product. If an answer is wrong, check whether a regrouped digit was forgotten or added in the wrong column. These are the most common errors in multi-digit multiplication. This worksheet supports Common Core standard 4.NBT.B.5 (multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations).
