About this worksheet

Decimals show up everywhere in daily life, from money to measurements, and this fifth-grade worksheet gives students solid practice adding them. It includes 20 problems with decimals to the hundredths place, ranging from small amounts like 0.47 to values up to 99.99. Every number is written with two decimal places so students can focus on lining up place values correctly.

How to use it: the most important rule is to line up the decimal points. When the decimal points are aligned, tenths are added to tenths and hundredths to hundredths, just like ones and tens in whole-number addition. Students then add from right to left, regrouping when a column reaches ten or more, and bring the decimal point straight down into the answer. Thinking in money can help: 3.75 + 2.50 is like $3.75 plus $2.50. Estimating by rounding to whole numbers is a quick way to check whether an answer is reasonable.

The answer key on page two lists every sum, written to the hundredths. If an answer is off by a factor of ten, the decimal points were probably not aligned. This worksheet supports Common Core standard 5.NBT.B.7 (add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value).
