About this worksheet

Once children can count to 10, the next step is counting larger groups accurately. This kindergarten worksheet uses ten-frames, the two-row boxes of five that many classrooms use, to make counting to 20 easier to see. Each of the eight problems shows two ten-frames filled with dots. Children count the dots and write the total in the box.

Ten-frames are powerful because they help children notice structure instead of counting every single dot. A full ten-frame is always 10, so a child looking at one full frame and three more dots can think "10 and 3 more is 13." This is the beginning of place value, the idea that numbers from 11 to 19 are made of one ten and some ones.

How to use it: at first, let your child touch and count each dot. Then ask, "Is the top frame full? How many is a full frame?" Encourage them to start at 10 and count on. If writing teen numbers is tricky, remind them that the 1 comes first even though we say "seventeen" with the seven first.

The answer key lists the number for each problem. This worksheet supports Common Core standards K.CC.B.5 (count to answer "how many?" questions about as many as 20 things), K.CC.A.3 (write numbers from 0 to 20), and K.NBT.A.1 (compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones).
